Champs scramble, youngster shines

Lee McMurrich plays from a slightly unusual location while attempting to reach the 18th green.

It has taken zero time flat for both brilliant and questionable performances to hit centre stage as the Neville Richards Premier League kicked off for season 2023.

The very reputable forensic accounting firm of Milne, Milne and Hayes have estimated team scores of approximately 192-196 will be the norm as we learn what to expect with larger teams and an additional counting score.

But, just like the wayward drives of his father, Cooper McMurrich showed just how far off the mark that expectation might be when the rising junior carded an incredible 42 points in his Premier League debut to power the Crusaders to an extraordinary 221 points and a 27-point demolition of the highly fancied Peakers.

His new teammate Cliff McCorkell had 40 points himself and despite David Milne’s gallant effort (35) to give himself a personal platform from which to exit the PPP team, his highly touted colleagues couldn’t go with him and left the Peakers high and dry.

Another team instantly in the effluent is the Goblins, who were summarily hammered by the Warriors to the tune of 22 points. And as if to personally shove it straight up some video hosts who may or may not have queried him last week, Pete De Fazio was the architect of the Warriors’ brilliance with another 38 points after being so consistent last season.

The powerhouse women’s contingent of the Bullies lived up to expectations, but they couldn’t match their pennant teammate Helen Powe who gave herself an early birthday present of 39 points to power the Hookers to another resounding 18-point victory.

Which left just one match that went down to the wire – and it literally couldn’t have been any closer.

The Tornadoes and defending champion Pirates slugged it out until the bitter end and could not be split. Although some of the of tales gathered by the video makers will soon make you realise that it’s more a matter of what could have been for the Tornadoes.

So without further ado, check out the video and see who copped the early Milne Missile to begin season 2023 …
